Chaos, Controversy & Triumph: We call it "Nigeria's Week of High Stakes and Resilience"
Hey Zitizen,
We still remain your go-to Newsletter for all major governance-related news in Nigeria. In this week’s roundup, we are into some of the most pressing issues facing the country.
To begin, we are excited to share with you news on the ‘Civic Fest A frica’24’. As proud community partners, we thought to bring it to you firsthand.
DSS vs SERAP: What's Really Going On?
The Department of State Services (DSS) paid a “visit” to the Abuja office of SERAP (Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project), sparking major concerns.
SERAP called it harassment, but DSS says it was just a lawful investigation, not an intimidation move. Either way, people aren’t taking it lightly. Who’s telling the full story?

Borno’s Devastating Flood: 30 Dead, 414k Displaced
In Maiduguri, floodwaters are wreaking havoc. Over 30 people have tragically lost their lives, and nearly half a million are displaced after the Alau Dam overflowed.
To add to the crisis, a jailbreak at the Maiduguri Correctional Center has made matters worse, with several inmates escaping in the chaos. As rescue and relief efforts continue, President Tinubu has directed federal agencies to step up their game.
Dangote vs Oil Marketers: The Drama is still on
Dangote’s refinery is ready to sell diesel at a lower price, but local marketers aren’t happy about it. They’d rather keep importing and maintain high prices. According to Dangote, only 3% of his refinery’s products are being bought locally, while the rest is shipped to international markets.
In other news, Dangote is in talks with the government about a possible deal based in Naira. Will this change the game? Only time will tell.
Kidnapped Students Rescued in Kaduna!
Good news from Kaduna! Soldiers have successfully rescued 13 students from terrorists in Kachia. After a fierce gunfight, the students (6 males and 7 females) were freed, and weapons were recovered. Hats off to the troops for this one!
VAT Stays at 7.5% – For Now
There’s been talk of a possible VAT increase from 7.5% to 10%, but Finance Minister Wale Edun has clarified that there are no current plans to raise the VAT rate. For now, things remain steady, but we’ll have to see what the future holds.

Flood Alert! Watch Out for the Rivers Niger & Benue
The government has issued a serious flood warning, urging residents to stay alert around the Niger and Benue rivers.
As rain levels rise, states like Kogi, Anambra, Benue, Niger, and Delta are at high risk of flooding. Authorities are advising residents in these areas to take precautions and stay informed.

Remember what I said at the beginning about being a community partner? Well, this is another reminder to register for the “Civic Fest Africa’24”, if you haven’t already.
